Teacher TV produced documentary at Grey Coat

November 2009

On Tuesday 17th November a film crew was at the school all day in order to produce a documentary for Teacher TV on CASE (Cognitive Acceleration through Science Education).  The school has delivered this intervention programme through the Science curriculum since 1995.

The aim of the thirty CASE activities is to challenge students on a cognitive level so that they gain the ability to solve problems through social mediation with their teacher and peers.  Martina Lecky, Deputy Head, is an accredited CASE
trainer through King’s College, London, and had led and maintained this initiative since it was introduced to the school. In addition, she has been doing empirical research on CASE for the last four years which will lead to a Doctorate in Education.  The school was approached by Teacher TV because one of the founders, Professor Phillip Adey, recommended Grey Coat’s Science department.  The programme will be broadcast early next year on Teacher TV.

Part of the schedule for the day involved 7Y being taught CASE activity four by Tom Xavier, one of the experienced CASE teachers.  The class were a credit to the school in terms of the engagement and enthusiasm of students for the cognitive challenge of how to control variables.  In addition, one student from each Year 7 and 8  form class took part in a group discussion with Ms Lecky about CASE lessons, which focused on students’ reflections about their learning experiences.
