Grey Coat Receives Pastoral Visit from Archbishop of Canterbury

January 2010

Members of the school community were delighted to welcome the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, to the school on Monday 18th January 2010. Archbishop Rowan arrived at 2 p.m. and was given a short tour of the school by two members of the year 9 Ambassadors’ team, Catherine Lyon and Bethany Lees. The Archbishop was able to visit a number of lessons, see the school Library and catch a glimpse of the building work where the new Arts Block is being put up as part of the Building Schools for the Future programme.

The whole Lower School community then gathered in the Great Hall for a special assembly, where he was greeted in Welsh by Alma Wilson. Archbishop Rowan talked to the staff, students and governors about a Christian understanding of freedom, drawing on an early experience in South Africa, and taking as his text ‘The truth will set you free’.

At the end of the afternoon the following students entertained the Archbishop to afternoon tea

Y 7 - Libby Blacknell & Basma Elboussaki
Y 8 - Sarah Warriner & Afra Aabdien
Y 9 - Maddie Planer & Lois Cobblah
Y10 - Daisy Ibsen & Kirsty Korley
Y11 - Edwina Lawson & Hannah Timson

The group was later joined by staff and governors.
