Gym and Dance 2009
On Tuesday 24th November over 150 pupils in Year 7 – 11 performed in the annual Gym and Dance display.
The two performances were a culmination of two months of hard work creating, auditioning and practising their pieces.
For many of the pupils this was their first time performing in front of a large audience and here is what two pupils in 7R thought of the event:
“The Gym and Dance display was fantastic. There were so many different kinds of dances and gymnastic routines that it kept you entertained throughout. All the performers gave 110% effort and energy in their dance and everyone seemed to recognise this in their applause. The crowd went crazy for everyone and Ms Young was particularly energetic when the finale was being performed! The Gym and Dance display is something that everyone looks forward to and all the acts were amazing.” Seren Williams 7R
“The gymnastics in the Gym and Dance display were very interesting as all of the gymnasts weren’t just good, they were brilliant! They did routines on the beam, on the floor and also on the trampette and spring board. It was great and intense to watch as they demonstrated their skills. The dancing was also just as spectacular with many types of dance being included in the display, such as ballet, contemporary, Indian, bollywood and street dance. The audience also went wild for the tap dancers – Harriet Harvey in 9G and Harley-Mae Charles in 7G.” Alice McLeod-Bishop 7R
Year 7 Football Team Through to the Final of Westminster Schools Cup On Wednesday 2nd December the Year 7 football team took part in the Westminster School Cup Final. They beat 4 teams to reach the final but were unlucky on the day to lose to Marylebone School 2-1 in a hard-fought match. The girls should be proud of their achievement to reach the final in their first year as a team together is awesome! They have only been playing together for 3 months but you wouldn’t be able to tell that based on how they perform on the football pitch.
The girls who made it to the final are: Kiana Arabpour, Chloe Murr, Araba Banson, Rebekah Thoma, Keeley Lloyd-Janes, Carla Cooper, Sade Turner-Moise, Libby Blacknell and Mathilde Edgington-Pollard.
Well done to all the girls involved!
Under 13’s English School Cup On Thursday 1st October the under 13’s Grey Coat football team took part in the English Schools Cup. The game was played against Eltham Green Sports College on their 11 aside football pitch. This was the first time that the under 13’s have played together this year but you wouldn’t know that judging by their performance. An entertaining match ended with a 3-2 win to Grey Coats. The girls worked very hard for their victory, coming from behind twice to eventually win the game. Two fantastic individual goals from Ruth Oburoh and a sweet volley from Katie Sapiano-Oakley were enough to see off a very strong, organised Eltham Green side. Every player gave their all for the side. Bethany Kilminster in goal making two very good saves. The defence frustrated the oppositions attack and the midfielders and strikers worked as an engine to chase down every single ball and break down play.
The performance was indeed amazing as Grey Coats battled their way into the next round - the furthest Grey Coats have ever gone in this competition.
It is hard to pick out a girl of the match as they all deserve recognition for their hard work, but captain Jasmine Gotobed was the one who wouldn’t let her team-mates heads drop when they went behind each time and eventually spurred her team on to win the game. She linked the defence with attack and ran tirelessly back and forth for the whole game. The girls involved in this victory were: Bethany Kilminster, Charlotte Finn, Chloe Murr, Carla Cooper Robinson, Sade Turner – Moise, Carla Cooper Robinson, Araba Banson, Katie Sapiano-Oakley ,Jasmine Gotobed, Gmanoh Choloply, Ruth Oburoh, Elena Rastorgueva, Arabella Starbuck.
The girl’s behaviour and sportsmanship (especially at the end of the game) was a fine example of the Grey Coat spirit. Our next match will be coming up shortly against Shenfield School from Essex. Good luck to our girls!
Grey Coat Hospital Football Team Won the first match of Westminster Tournament Campaign The Year 9+10 Grey Coat Hospital football team kicked off their Westminster tournament campaign with an amazing 8-2 thumping of St George’s.
For the first 10 minutes St Georges set about to frustrate Grey Coat by not allowing any space in behind their defence and literally chased down every ball goal bound.
Danielle Belcher was linking defence with attack as Grey Coat looked for there first of a flurry of goals. Florence Maxwell nearly took the keepers head off with an amazing free kick but it wasn’t until after that when Grey Coat gained the confidence to knock the ball about and make St Georges work hard to win the ball back. The girls sit top of Westminster girls group B with a +6 goal difference and the 3 times winners look odds on to make it a 4th for the final appearance in the Westminster tournament. The girls were Audrey Maduike, Athalia John, Ivy Rowe, Lily Andoh-Cunnell, Danielle Belcher, Ellie Atkinson, Florence Maxwell and Shazelle Joseph-Peters.
The Year 8 Grey Coat Hospital football team also faced St George’s but were given a sterner test. The Year 8 team won this tournament last year amazingly without conceding a single goal. They won this game 3-1 but it should and could have been by far more. The strike of the match came 10 minutes before the end when Gmanoh Choloply belted in a free kick to make it 3-0 to Grey Coat before St George’s punished some sloppy and casual defending to hit back with a consolation goal. The girls put in a spirited performance and Jasmine Gotobed led by example in driving her team on. All the girls played to their best and face group leaders Quinton Kingston in their next match. The girls were Bethany Kilminster, Laura Ivey, Charlotte Finn, Jasmine Gotobed, Katie Sapiano-Oakley, Elena Rastrogueva, Arabella Starbuck, Gmanoh Choloply, Ruth Oburoh.
Year 7 Rounders Tournament (June 2009) On Wednesday 24th June the Year 7 Rounders team played in the final of the Westminster Schools Rounders tournament against the mighty St Augustines. The Year 7 team lost the toss and batted first. There was some superb batting from Jasmine Gotobed, Bobbi Benjamin-wand and Gmanoh Choloply and Grey Coat racked up 46 points in total with not a single player being out.
When it was Grey Coat’s turn to field the team showed some sensational skills with Katie Sapiano Oakley making an excellent backstop and Elena Rastorgueva showing solid hands on first base. Tierney Andrews who was fielding out deep made some superb, accurate throws. St Augustine’s struggled to score rounders and had several players being caught and stumped out. Harriet Wright demonstrated some quick thinking when she stumped fourth base to prevent any further players from St Augustness returning to bat and thus finishing the game.
Final score Grey Coat 46 points to St Augustine’s 10 points. A superb end to the school year. Congratulations to the Year 7 team for becoming Westminster Champions!
