Sixth Form Extra Curricular: Prefects

There is a long tradition of appointing a Head Girl as the boards on the Wooden Staircase in the St Andrews building illustrate. Since the admission of boys to the Sixth Form, we have also had a Head or Deputy Head Boy.

The Head Girl and her Deputies have always contributed to major school events such as Prize Day and the Admissions Ceremony as well as reading at church services.

Prefects are very much involved in liaising with the junior forms at the Lower School building, although the Sixth Form is based at St Michael’s.

There are specific Prefects who are, for instance, responsible for charity, helping with library supervision, producing the school newspaper The Coat Rack, assisting with sport practices and Sports Day, and organising guest speakers.

A Prefect’s job is what each student makes of it: it’s about taking responsibility, working as part of a team and developing important skills.

The positions are decided during the Spring Term and the hand-over is just after February half term. Students who are interested in applying for the above mentioned positions must prove their suitability during the first two terms. They must show initiative, reliability and leadership skills. For the past seven years, we have held ‘Head Girl and Head Boy Presentations’ as part of the process of choosing the Head Girl/Boy. This has given the candidates an opportunity to present their vision for the Sixth Form to two members of every form in the school, as well as teachers, Governors and Sixth Form students.
