The Grey Coat Hospital Guild has launched it's fundraising appeal to raise £25,000 to fund the design, making and installation of a stained glass window for the Chapel in Lower School, St Andrew’s. Created by artist craftsman Michael Coles, the window will celebrate the special ethos of the school and be a lasting memorial which the present generation of Greys can offer to pupils, staff and parents of the future. Once the window is in place ledger list of all the names of the donors will be kept on show in the Chapel.

This is an opportunity for us, who are currently benefitting from an education and a school second to none, to say a huge thank you. We will be launching our Appeal soon so watch this space.

The design:

The design is for the new Window of the school chapel at the St Andrew’s site of the school and it's size is just under 10ft square. The theme is ‘Christ the Teacher’.

The centre of the design shows Christ with one hand raised in blessing, while in the other he holds the open book inscribed with two texts. The first is from Psalm 91, verse 4 – “He will cover you with his wings and you will be safe under his feathers: his faithfulness will be your shield and defence”. The second is from the Gospel of St Matthew, 24:37, with Christ's saying: “How often have I longed to gather your children, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings”.

The figure of our Lord is backed by a representation of the four elements – Earth, Air, Fire and Water.

On the left, St Andrew, patron of the school, introduces the boy with the loaves and fishes as described in John 6: 8-12.

On the right, the great reforming Head Mistress of the school, Miss Elsie Day (1874-1910), presents two pupils from Grey Coat, one a Charity Child from the days of the schools’ founding, and one in contemporary dress representing the school of today. Together they present The Grey Coat Hospital to Christ.
