Language College : Shanghai Exchange
In October the long awaited return visit by Shanghai No. 3 Girls’ School, our exchange partner in China, took place. Although the link between the 2 schools was set up over two years ago with Grey Coat visiting Shanghai in April 2002, it had had to be postponed twice because of SARS and visa problems.
The group was made up of 4 students and 4 teachers. The girls from Year 9 who volunteered to host the Chinese girls, were concerned that they wouldn’t like Western food despite our assurances that there were several McDonalds outlets in Shanghai much frequented by the young in China. Our guests arrived laden with presents including some lovely pottery and other Chinese souvenirs. They stayed one week in London and spent the days either in lessons or touring London and nearby attractions.
One morning they made presentations in English to the whole school at assembly: Their English was extraordinarily impressive and our girls could not believe how fluent they were. We are hoping it will spur them on to improve their French, German, Spanish ……
We will be making our return visit at the end of May with 15 of our Year 9 & 10 girls spending 10 days in China.
