Have you heard about the HPV vaccine?

The school health service will be delivering the HPV vaccine in every Westminster School from the beginning of October 2010 to all year 8 girls.  The girls will receive 3 doses over a six month period

• HPV is a common virus that 8 out of 10 women will catch at some time in their lives.

• 99% of all cervical cancer cases are caused by HPV infection.

• 2800 woman are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year in the UK

• 1000 women die from cervical cancer every year in the UK.

The vaccine gives 99% protection from the 2 strains of the virus that cause over 70% of cervical cancer.  It works best if the girls have it before they become sexually active.
