'Spring Awakening' (School Play Dec 2009)

The Upper School Play this year started on Wednesday 2nd December and runs for three nights until Friday 4th December.

Originally written in 1890 by German playwright Frank Wedekind, it was subsequently banned by the Lord Chamberlain until 1968.  Taken from the more modern Edward Bond translation, it focuses on adolescent curiosity and sexuality and the tragic consequences of adults hiding the facts of life from 19th century teenagers.  This group of young students try to cope with growing up and the pressures of school.  Melchior Gabor is a promising yet curious boy at a high-pressure school.  He becomes involved with a young teenage girl, Wendla Bergmann.  Their relationship is brief but ends disastrously when she falls pregnant.  Unaware of what has happened and how, as her mother hadn’t told her the truth about sex, Wendla is forced to deal with the matter in an appropriate manner for the time.  Meanwhile, Moritz, a friend of Melchior’s who is also struggling with his own growing maturity, is finding school impossible and is close to failure.

It is £5 per ticket and promises to be a combination of excellent acting, wonderful direction and amazing design.  I would like to invite all staff to attend and support colleagues and students both on stage and behind the scenes who have worked so hard to bring this to life.  I know the students are very excited to perform for you all. I hope to see you there, for this performance is not to be missed!  The tickets, in all their glory, can be obtained from Caroline Duck or Ann McMellan.

"Those who have seen Caroline Duck’s previous productions at The Grey Coat Hospital would expect the highest standards for any play which she directs. ”Spring Awakening” exceeded expectations. Brilliant performances stunned and entertained the audience which was also impressed by the special effects and the revolving stage. Every aspect was outstanding."  As reviewed by one of the audience
