All aboard for a voyage of discovery as Grey Coat students set sail on a day to remember!

PRESS RELEASE
1st October 2010
Students at The Grey Coat Hospital are to experience their fifth annual pastoral day this Friday, with what promises to be the most exciting theme yet; ‘Discovery’. Following on from previous school year themes including ‘Aim Higher’, ‘Wisdom’, ‘Identity’, and last year’s ‘Freedom’, students will be encouraged to take a voyage of discovery around their school for the day, embarking on a journey ‘around the world’ whilst exploring their potential and working towards realising their dreams.
The day will begin with students arriving at school through the front entrance and being taken aboard the S.S. Discovery where the ship, and the day, will be officially launched. From there on there will be workshops in various Ports around the school – Australia, Japan, China, Italy and Greece – and students will receive a log-book to chart their journey along the way. Guest speakers on the day include Captain Edward Argles from the Royal Navy, and Jake Meyer, the record breaking mountaineer and adventurer.
Students will be encouraged to consider discovery of themselves, their community and their world whilst working in their form groups, forming strong bonds by working in teams and communicating with each other through an exciting array of activities off-timetable. Brazilian dancing, Tai Chi, Venetian mask-making, calligraphy exercises and code breaking are just some of the workshops that will feature on the day.
A whole team of staff – ranging from Teachers, Senior Managers, to Learning Support Assistants and Administrators - have been planning the project for 3 months to create this special day and the whole school community is involved.
Headteacher Rachel Allard says, ‘the idea behind Discovery Day is to bring the school community at Grey Coat together at the start of a new academic year, whilst launching a theme that will permeate the year ahead. Following on from our best ever exam results this summer we want to encourage students to discover a passion for learning, and lead students into a fuller life, where they value learning for its own sake, as well as achieving excellent grades’.
