A Level - GCE Applied Business

At A level, Business Studies students have the opportunity to study the following GCE courses with Edexcel Examination Board:-

  • GCE Full Award                         (equivalent to 2 A-Levels)
  • GCE Single Award                    (equivalent to 1 A-Level)
  • GCSE Part Award                      (equivalent to A/S Level)

The Applied Business course has been developed to provide a broad educational basis for further training, further education or for moving into appropriate employment within the business sector.  The course is designed to be delivered in a work-related context and to allow learners to develop an understanding of the business sector. These courses are for student over 16 with at least five Grade C passes at GCSE, which must include English and Maths.

GCE Full Award
The course is made up of six compulsory units and six optional units over a period of two years.

COMPULSORY UNITS comprise

  • Unit 1                Investigating People at Work (externally assessed examination)
  • Unit 2                Investigating Business (internally assessed coursework)
  • Unit 3                Investigating Marketing (internally assessed coursework)
  • Unit 4                Investigating Electronic Business (internally assessed coursework)
  • Unit 5                Investigating Promotion (externally assessed examination)
  • Unit 7                Investigating Enterprise (internally assessed coursework)
OPTIONAL UNITS comprise:-
  • Unit 8    Business Development (externally assessed synoptic coursework)
  • Unit 9    Managing and Developing People (internally assessed coursework)
  • Unit 10  Marketing Decision (externally assessed examination)
  • Unit 12  International Dimensions of Business (internally assessed coursework)
  • Unit 13  Organising an Event (internally assessed coursework)
  • Unit 14  Influences on Business (internally assessed coursework)
GCE Single Award
The course is made up of three compulsory units and three optional units over a period of two years.

Examination/Assessment details
One third of the qualification is externally assessed through examinations.  The remainder of the units will be assessed through set coursework.  At the end of each course the student will have produced a portfolio of evidence (coursework).  Each student will be given a course outline at the beginning of the year to help them plan and meet important coursework deadlines.  Students will be given four interim deadlines for each coursework unit.  This will allow the student to complete manageable tasks and make any relevant improvements to their coursework during the interim period.
