This course requires wide reading, particularly at A2. Students have to read many books outside the specification, including literary criticism. All novels are read independently before they are taught; this means students must have read ‘Pride and Prejudice’ before starting the AS course, and a minimum of 4 novels before starting the A2 course. Also students must attend theatre regularly and be prepared to read poetry in their spare time as wide background knowledge is needed. This included a broad understanding of historical and social context for all the set texts.
Classes are frequently run through seminar-style discussion where all students are expected to contribute; students may be asked to lead these through presentations or chairing. Homework is usually an essay a week, preparation and research for the next lesson, reading and learning quotations.
