GCH awarded DCSF International School Award!
The Grey Coat Hospital became an ‘International School’ in September 2008, obtaining a DCSF International School Award, which we will retain until 2011. The International School Award is in recognition of the fantastic work carried out across the curriculum towards promoting an international ethos within the school. The variety of activities, focus groups, events and foreign exchanges available to students at GCH, not just within the Modern Foreign Languages department, but right across the whole school, has led to increased global and cultural awareness in recent years. Ms Worsfold, as International Ethos Coordinator for GCH, was presented the award by BBC Newscaster, George Alagiah, in a prestigious ceremony on 8th October 2008. Congratulations to all those involved in achieving this award.

The International Student Committee continues this year to discuss how to promote the international ethos at the school. The committee is made up of the elected International Representatives (global reps) from each form but any one interested is more than welcome. In order to show how international our students are, a Grey Coat International Community map has been put up on the International Notice-board. Students and teachers alike are invited to place a sticker on the map of the world showing where their family are from. It aims to highlight international events at the school and inform readers of international issues. The new International reps undertook their first duty this year by helping out with European Day of Languages on 29 th September 2008.

In February students from The Grey Coat Hospital joined forces with students from Westminster City School to create and perform a musical international project. Fifty students from Year 9 were selected from a whole year group opera experience workshop. These selected students then wrote, composed and rehearsed the project in one week. Their final performance was on Monday 11 February 2008. The aim of the project was to increase awareness of the international community represented within both schools and in the Westminster wider community. The theme given to them was 'Worldly Wisdom' which links in with the school theme of ‘Wisdom’ at The Grey Coat Hospital. The students considered where we can find wisdom in the world, regardless of race, religion or creed. Working with internationally acclaimed opera singers, film makers and musicians from Tinderbox Artists and Three Blue Legs Films, the students produced an outstanding performance of drama and music entitled ‘One Wise World’. The project was a great success and the students should be very proud of themselves.
Ongoing and to come:

Mondialogo International School Competition. A team has been entered into the Mondialogo School Competition. It is run by UNESCO and funded by DaimlerChrysler for intercultural dialogue and exchange. It has been running for 4 years now and has included students from over 140 countries worldwide. It is a fantastic opportunity for Grey Coat students to find out more about their own and other cultures and to learn to work together with a partner team from another continent. Our school has been assigned a partner team in Argentina. The teams have started to make contact with each other, and will soon choose and agree on a topic and work jointly on a common project in a process of mutual exchange. The final project will be submitted by 31 May 2008. www.mondialogo.org

World Challenge GCH will be taking a team on a trip with World Challenge in the summer of 2009. The team will spend 4 weeks travelling the Maya Route through Mexico, Guatemala and Belize. They will be trekking and undertaking community work. The students will be fundraising for this trip over the next two years so watch this space! (There are still spaces available should any new students be interested in joining us – see Miss Worsfold)

The Amnesty International Youth Group The Amnesty International youth group’s focus is to find out about human rights abuses throughout the world and campaign for individuals to be helped. This year we aim to broaden people's knowledge of what is going on in the world through assemblies and other events. The students have already prepared and presented an assembly to lower school on the problem of modern day human trafficking. The focus for the rest of the term will be China (linking in with the 2008 Olympics) and Burma. We meet every Wednesday lunch time in the chapel at lower school. All are welcome.
