Latin at The Grey Coat Hospital

The school offers students the chance to study Latin as a third language option from GCSE level, beginning in Year 10. This is a two year accelerated course and although no previous knowledge of the language is necessary, it is more suitable for those with a natural aptitude for languages. Latin has proved a great success at the school with great results - 88% of students gained an A*-C grade at GCSE level in 2006.

Students who wish to continue studying Latin after their GCSE course can take A Level Latin at Westminster School, the independent boys school behind Westminster Abbey. We have an Independent/State School partnership with Westminster School and they have generously offered free places to our girls on their A Level Latin courses for the last 6 years.

This collaboration has been enormously successful with 3 girls having already gone on to
Oxford to read Classics and 2 others to Oxford and Cambridge to read other subjects. There is no doubt that even the more prestigious universities are impressed by students from the state sector who have A Level Latin.

The recent press has indicated that there is a revival in the teaching of Latin in secondary schools, largely due to the Cambridge School Classics Project (CSCP) making the course available online. To read more on this, click on the link below:
