Modern Foreign Languages Curriculum

The school is a specialist Language College and has held this status since 2002. All girls are required to study at least one language throughout their school life up to GCSE level. They can then choose to continue language study into the Sixth Form if they so wish.

KS3 Languages
In Year 7 students will have 5 lessons of Spanish and 1 lesson of Mandarin per fortnight.
In Year 8 students will continue to study Spanish and will be allocated either French or German as a second language.  Mandarin will be offered as an afternoon lesson once a week.

KS4 / GCSE Languages
All students will continue to study at least one language at GCSE level and most will continue with their second language option. As a Language College we are keen for as many girls as possible to study at least two languages at GCSE level, from the following:

GCSE French
GCSE German
GCSE Spanish

Mandarin is currently offered as an enrichment activity after school.

Those who do opt for the two languages will have two lessons per week of each language. For those studying just one language there will be four lessons per week of that language. GCSE Latin as a third language option is also offered to those keen linguists.

Furthermore, those girls who take part in the Japanese exchange will learn Japanese as a language.

Languages at ‘A’ Level
We offer French, Spanish, German or Mandarin at AS and A2 levels. In addition we also offer our Sixth Formers GCSE Italian. Latin is also available at A level and is studied at the nearby Westminster School, of which we have an independent / state school partnership. To find out more about Latin, please click here.
