Modern Foreign Languages Curriculum
The school is a specialist Language College and has held this status since 2002. All girls are required to study at least one language throughout their school life up to GCSE level. They can then choose to continue language study into the Sixth Form if they so wish.
KS3 Languages All students will study two languages in Years 7 to 9. Tutor groups G,R and Y will study Spanish and German, and tutor groups C, T and H will study Spanish and French. Mandarin will be offered as a lunchtime or after school lesson in each year.
KS4 / GCSE Languages All students will continue to study at least one language at GCSE level and most will continue with their second language option. As a Language College we are keen for as many girls as possible to study at least two languages at GCSE level, from the following:
GCSE French GCSE German GCSE Spanish
Mandarin is currently offered as an optional additional lesson to students in Years 8 – 12. Students who sign up for Mandarin are expected to attend all lessons and prepare for an Asset Languages qualification in Mandarin.
Those who do opt for the two languages will have two lessons per week of each language. For those studying just one language there will be four lessons per week of that language. GCSE Latin as a third language option is also offered to those keen linguists.
Students who have a knowledge of Mandarin may be prepared for additional public exams such as GCSE and A Level.
Furthermore, those girls who take part in the Japanese exchange will learn Japanese as a language.
Languages at ‘A’ Level We offer French, Spanish and German at AS and A2 levels. Latin is also available at A level and is studied at the nearby Westminster School, of which we have an independent / state school partnership. To find out more about Latin, please click here. Mandarin is offered as an enrichment lesson. |
