Year 8 Dance Group win Westminster Dance Challenge...

July 2008
On Tuesday 8th July, eighteen Year 8 students represented The Grey Coat Hospital in the City of Westminster finals for the Dance Challenge™ competition.

Dance Challenge™ is an annual dance competition, established in 2005 by Director and former professional dancer, Tomorr Kokona. It is a unique competition for young people and an innovative showcase that challenges and rewards young dancers from all walks of life.

The 18 students from The Grey Coat Hospital choreographed their own dance for this competition. It included a range of dance styles, such as Indian and Street Dance. It also included a ‘stomping’ section, where the students created their own music by clapping and stomping in rhythm with one another.

Their dance piece was performed on stage at the Cadogan Hall in Sloane Square, in front of an audience and against competition from other Westminster schools. Their performance of the dance showed fantastic focus, energy and enthusiasm.

After a nerve wracking performance, the students were greatly rewarded for their efforts and achieved 1st place in the Dance Challenge™ competition. As well as being given a trophy, the students have also received a £150 voucher to invite a professional choreographer to the school, who will work with them in order to further develop their dance skills.

By winning this regional final, The Grey Coat Hospital team are now through to the UK Dance Challenge™ Finals, which will be held at Cadogan Hall on Friday 18th July 2008. We wish them all the best for this competition.

*Update: we are proud to announce that the girls came second place at the London final on 18th July.
