The Rt Hon Gordon Brown MP, Chancellor of the Exchequer visited Grey Coat on Wednesday 7th March, along with Tessa Jowell MP, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport and Richard Caborn MP, Minister for Sport . The visit was to mark the announcement of the host cities for UK School Games leading upto the Olympics in 2012.
The UK School Games is a multi-sport event for the nation's most talented athletes aged between 13-16 years old. Launched in 2006 in Glasgow, the games will be held every year until the Olympics in 2012 and are designed to replicate the feel of events like the Olympic Games. This year's event will take place in Coventry and the Chancellor announced the remaining four host cities for the games as follows:
- the West of England (Bath and Bristol) in 2008;
- Wales (Cardiff, Swansea and Newport) in 2009;
- Tyne and Wear (Newcastle, Gateshead and Sunderland) in 2010;
- Sheffield in 2011.
The aim is to encourage more young people to become involved in sports, whether it be by participating, or as an official.
Gordon Brown made reference to being a keen sportsman in his school days and said, "this is the most exciting time ever for sport in this country. The range of sports in schools today is amazing". He expressed his belief that by hosting the Olympics, the communities of Britain will pull together in support of our future athletes. Brown finished his speech by saying, "Britain works best when Britain works together".
