Guild
Welcome to all Greys, their parents and carers
Apparently the word Guild has its origins in Old Norse though it is more often associated with the medieval world. Literally it is “an association formed for the mutual aid and protection of its members or for the furtherance of some common purpose” (SOED). And so it is with the Grey Coat Guild. It is our association of parents, carers, staff and friends who help to raise money to fund extras for the school and also organise social events. All of us are automatically members and meetings are held twice a term on the second Wednesday after the beginning of term and after half term. So do come along to a meeting or come to the social events –or preferably both.

All change at Peter Jones
Since time began GCH uniform could be bought from Peter Jones. You walked through the door, decided on size and style and walked out with it. No more. Under the guise of making it simpler, uniform can now be bought only online – it is no longer physically available from the shop. We interviewed Peter Jones on your behalf and here are their answers to what we considered vital questions.
Does Peter Jones still offer a measuring service?
Yes. Multiple samples, in all sizes and styles, are available instore to try on. However, under no circumstances will these samples be sold.
Can we order items at Peter Jones then and there?
Yes. PODs (portable ordering devices) can be used at the time of trying on. Orders made before 7pm (subject to availability) can be collected instore the following day after 2pm. Otherwise delivery times and charges vary. Enquire at the time of ordering or look online for details.
Are there any times which are busier than others?
Friday afternoons and Saturdays are the most popular times for buying uniform. If you can do it outside these times you will not have to wait so long.
Do you keep any “non specific” items of uniform in store?
Yes. [But on further questioning the answer was really: nothing important. All items your interviewer asked about -such as the grey skirts and blazers which are used by other schools - are still only available for order online. Assume that only socks and tights are available and you won’t be disappointed.]
When would you recommend Greys and New Greys to order their uniform?
Do not leave it to the last minute. New Greys would be well advised to order no later than the beginning of August for the September start of term. The return period on unworn school uniform is not restricted to the usual 28 days. If there is any doubt you are advised to buy more than one size and return the unwanted item in September. [A glance at the Peter Jones/John Lewis website shows that ready availability is not guaranteed at any time of the year. As we went to press there were NO gold sports polo shirts, in any size, at all.]
These are just “basic” questions. Further information may be had online at www.johnlewis.com/schoolwear or ring Peter Jones who seem happy to help.
All help from members of the Guild – you - is eagerly encouraged to welcome New Greys and their parents and carers to the school. Even if you can only offer an hour or two please do volunteer. For further details on how you can help do email venetia@vyvyan.org or turn up on the day from 10am onwards – St Andrew’s, Lower School.
Stained Glass Window Appeal The Appeal has passed the £13,000 mark. As you will remember this is a fundraising campaign by your Guild – us parents. So thank you to all who have already contributed to this marvellous total. HOWEVER there is still some way to go before we reach our target. So please, please, please get those cheque books out, organise those fund raising events and make this window the reality it deserves to be.
ALL PARENTS & CARERS ARE AUTOMATICALLY MEMBERS AND ARE MOST WELCOME. SUPPORT YOUR SCHOOL AND GIVE IT A TRY!
