Curriculum The Grey Coat Hospital’s Sixth Form offers a diverse range of subjects, with a balance between the traditionally academic subjects and the vocationally directed subjects. The Sixth Form Grid contains a number of different subjects in four main blocks (A, B, C, D) and students are expected to choose one subject from each block. (Specific information on subjects can be obtained on each subject in course outlines). This is a provisional grid and therefore can be changed throughout the admissions’ process in order to resolve any clashes in students’ subject choices. For students who do not achieve the minimum of five grades A* - C at GCSE, we run the GNVQ at Intermediate level in Business Studies, which is a full one year course and is equivalent to five GCSEs at grades A* - C. If students achieve a merit or distinction in this course they can be considered for the Advanced Level courses the following year.
In addition to the main grid, the E block offers a range of enrichment subjects. As the school is a Language College, GCSE Italian is offered as a new one- year subject as well as a course in Mandarin at beginners’ level, which can lead to an Asset for Languages qualification. The school strongly urges all linguists to take up one of these extra languages.
In the Sixth Form, we encourage all students to take four subjects from the Sixth Form Grid as the aim of Curriculum 2000 was to encourage students to study a greater breadth of subjects post –sixteen. In Year 13, the majority of students focus on three of these subjects, and continue with these to A2 level.
