Curriculum : Work Related Learning
Careers, Enterprise and Work Related Learning
Careers Education Guidance enables students to progress successfully through learning and into work. WRL and Enterprise plays a crucial role in the preparation of young people for adult life and forms a key element of the Key Stages 3, 4 and the post 16 curriculum.
Work Related Learning comprises a set of experiences and opportunities which take place both inside and outside the classroom which help prepare young people for working life in the 21st century.
Work Related Learning involves:
• Learning through work – using the workplace and the classroom as a resource, environment and context for learning which realistically reflects how people work effectively in a modern economy.
• Learning about work – using subject specific contexts to increase pupils’ understanding of the world of work and its contribution to the community and the economy as a whole.
• Learning for work – equipping young people with the key skills and employability skills required for a successful working life.
GCH aims to develop a range of work related activities which enhance the curriculum by adding relevance and interest but which are fully integrated within the Key stage 3/4 and Post 16 curriculum.
The programme starts in Year 7 and is embedded in both the pastoral and academic curriculum. All year 8 students have their first experience of the world of work outside school by taking part in Take Your Daughter to Work. Year 9 participate in ‘Learn to Earn’ day. Year 10 has the experience of a day off timetable to take part in activities and team building exercises which enable the students to develop skills, qualities and attitudes that employers expect and then they will have a nine day Work Experience placement in the summer term. This also includes briefing and debriefing sessions as part of the programme. Year 11 take part in a Careers morning in the autumn term with guest speakers and workshops. All Year 11 students have an interview with the Careers Adviser.
There is a well stocked careers library in upper school and following their Year 11 careers interview the students will be given a research sheet which includes interactive websites for them to gain information.
There are also opportunities for students to have a business mentor.
In the Sixth Form, there is a speaker’s programme, work shadowing and an e-mentoring programme to help them find out more information about different careers.
There are opportunities for students Key Stage 3/4 and Post 16 to engage in Enterprise activities.
In 2004 GCH gained the CEI Excellence in WRL award.
