Language College

What it means to study at a Language College

The curriculum we offer is broad and balanced, and Grey Coat students go on to further and higher education well prepared to pursue their interests in every field. Language College gives our students something extra.

All students at The Grey Coat Hospital learn two languages from Years 7 to 9, and the majority continue with two at GCSE. All of our students in Key Stage 3 study Spanish; half the year group studies French, the other half studies German as their second foreign language.

In the Sixth Form we offer language A levels in French, German and Spanish.

The special emphasis on languages at Grey Coat has implications for all our students. We encourage all students to take part in a language exchange, usually in Years 9 or 10; we currently have partner schools in Münster in Germany and Pamplona, Spain. We also have a long established link with two secondary schools in Tokyo, and there is an opportunity for six girls in Year 10 to spend 10 days in Japan. The school can offer financial assistance in cases of hardship so that as many students as possible have the opportunity to participate in a trip at some point during their school career.

In addition to the exchanges we offer five day residential trips to France and Germany to all students in Year 7.
