The Grey Coat Hospital - GCSE Results 2023

We are delighted to celebrate the achievements of our Year 11 students. They have worked extremely hard, the more so as their GCSEs were taken within the context of unprecedented disruption and uncertainty over the past three years.

In the autumn of 2022, the exams regulator OFQUAL advised all schools that grade distributions in summer 2023 would be broadly in line with those of 2019.

The Grey Coat Hospital GCSE and BTEC results 2023 have not only remained high at all levels but have, in fact, exceeded our outstanding 2019 results. This is a testimony to the expert quality of teaching and assessment that takes place at our school; the high level of academic and pastoral support our staff provide; the continued hard work and resilience of our students; and the unwavering support of our parents and carers.

We are therefore very proud to share our provisional GCSE grades 2023 with you. Note that adjustments may follow once any re-marks are completed.

Our overall GCSE pass rate at grades 9-4 was 94.2% compared with an average of 67.8% in England in 2023. This continues a long-standing tradition of our students attaining well above the national average. The percentage of our grades 9-7 was 54% (45.9% in 2019) compared with an average of 21.6% in England in 2023.

Additionally, we are celebrating our students’ amazing achievements in the following areas which have exceeded our 2019 results:

  • The percentage of grades 9-4 in English and Mathematics at GCH was 90.9% (we attained 90.8% in 2019)
  • The percentage of grades 9-5 in English and Mathematics at GCH was 78% (we attained 73% in 2019)
  • 59.1% of students at GCH achieved the English Baccalaureate with all grades 9 to 5 (we attained 57.9% in 2019)

97% of our students took examinations in eight or more subjects in 2023, compared to 24.8% in England in 2023; with most of our students taking 10 or more GCSEs.

Of our students who took eight or more GCSEs, 27 attained all grades 9-7 in their subjects, which is a tremendous achievement. Many congratulations to all those individuals!

Several of our students deserve a special mention as ALL their GCSE results were grades 9 and/ or 8. These include:

  • DE VIVO Giulia – thirteen grades 9
  • GREY Sophie – thirteen grades 9
  • RACHEL Princetta – twelve grades 9
  • KAMAL Nafeesah – eleven grades 9 and one grade 8
  • HAMLEY Aelwen – eleven grades 9
  • VASSILIADIS Melina – eleven grades 9
  • APOSTOLOPOULOS Rodica – ten grades 9 and two grades 8
  • BUGLIONE Esther – ten grades 9 and two grades 8
  • CHEAH Izzy – six grades 9 and six grades 8
  • OLTON Alina – seven grades 9 and four grades 8
  • HEMSLEY Evie – six grades 9 and four grades 8

To put these outcomes in context, only 1.8% of students in England took 11 or more subjects at GCSE; and of those students in England who took exams in 11 or more GCSE subjects in 2023, only 125 students gained all grades 9.

Most of our students will take up places to study A-Levels in our Sixth Form. We look forward very much to welcoming them back to school in September, and to seeing them flourish and grow.

Others will take up courses at institutions elsewhere, suited to their interests and ambitions, and we look forward to hearing how they get on. Our door is always open for our Old Greys!

A huge “thank you” is due to all our staff, who have worked passionately and tirelessly to support our students throughout their courses, both academically and pastorally, and who inspired them to maintain the highest aspirations in such difficult circumstances.

We would like to thank all our students for the many contributions they have made to life at The Grey Coat Hospital over the past few years, and wish them every success, happiness and fulfilment in the future.

Grey Coat Students - A Level Results Summer 2023

We are delighted to share the achievements of our Summer 2023 cohort of A-Level students. This summer, they took public examinations for the first time in their secondary school career, having missed out on the chance to sit their GCSE examinations due to the pandemic. They have shown great determination and focus, and it has been wonderful to celebrate with them today.

The exams regulator OFQUAL advised schools in the autumn of 2022 that grade distributions this summer would revert broadly to those of 2019.

The Grey Coat Hospital A-Level results 2023 have remained high at all levels and are mostly above our outstanding 2019 results. This is a testimony to the expert teaching and high level of pastoral care given by our staff, the hard work and resilience of our students, and the unwavering support of our parents. We are extremely pleased to share our provisional grades (adjustments may follow upon re-marks) with you.

A*/A grades       36.5% (35.7% in 2019) - 26.5% in England in 2023

A*-B grades        68.5% (63.8% in 2019) - 52.7% in England in 2023

A*-C grades        87% (84.5% in 2019) - 75.4% in England in 2023

A*-E grades        99.8% (98.8% in 2019) - 97.2% in England in 2023

In total, we had 145 students in Year 13 and 131 applied to university. Seven students have gained places at Oxford or Cambridge and 61 students have so far secured places at the highly competitive Russell Group universities.  All our students will go on to take up places at a range of excellent and sought-after institutions.
